The name Crock of Shirt came to me suddenly one day. In fact, I have that date documented as October 26, 2011.
The name is one of the things that gets us quite a bit of attention from people. It makes people laugh out loud quite frequently, which obviously makes them feel good. It also makes us feel good. The name is a take on “crock of shit.” You probably knew that already, but putting that last sentence in here allowed me to use the word “shit.” I envisioned a business that would offer a variety of subject matter for shirt designs, which seemed to sound like a crock full of stuff. Like a big pot of ideas. A pot of shirts. A crock of shirts!
The first step for a logo was to sketch out ideas. I’ve always found it very difficult to make my own logos for myself and this was no different. I sketched out pictures of crock pots, letters, shirts, shirts in crock pots, shirts with stink fumes (not very good marketing), stars, circles, a bull, a person, a diamond, an arrow, and various hand-drawn font ideas. Ultimately, I wanted something that was more fun, kind of cheeky, and had a bit of attitude. Below are a couple of pages from my sketchbook. You can see the chosen sketch is circled in red.
Once the sketch was chosen and agreed upon, I scanned it into the computer and hand-traced it (as I do with everything) with a red outline. The red just allows me to see what I’m doing in contrast to the sketch layer underneath. Once the red was completed, I finalized the letters with some minor adjustments and filled with black for the completed logo. This is the same logo that appears like a signature on the bottom of all of our designs. I think it turned out quite well.
