I have to say this. I’ve been biting my tongue for the past few years, but the time has come to speak up. Just because I am a graphic designer/artist/illustrator or whatever I’m classified as, I should not, nor do I want to, work for free.
Let me say that again. I do not want to work for free. I should not have to work for free. I shall not work for free.
Okay? Are we clear?
I’m going to swear a bit now. This subject gets me fairly worked up and I tend to swear when I want to either be funny or make a point. Examples:
1) I was walking down the hallway in that building the other day and slipped on some piss. The sudden weight transfer almost made me shit.
2) From this point onward, I refuse to fucking work for free. Fuck it.
Graphic design, illustration, the arts, musician, acting, modelling, etc. are jobs. They are worthy of pay. Yes, they may be more accessible for people to “just pick up in their spare time” as a tryout or hobby than, say, dentistry. I went to school for design. Indeed, I have a total of three years of post-secondary education for design, plus 10+ years working at it professionally. Why am I expected to whip shit up for free or cheap? Would you ask your dentist to quickly clean your teeth as a favour? Think about it. Would you have the balls to ask your fuckin’ mechanic to come by and slap new brakes on your car for free? I bet you wouldn’t.
Here’s the thing. Money. I need money just as much as the next guy. I have bills to pay like everyone else. I need to eat like everyone else. My kids need to eat. So please stop offering to trade me a case of beer for a new logo that’s going to take me energy and research to brainstorm, time to sketch, and more time to design and illustrate correctly for you. If your cousin Roy can fuck it together on the cheap with his stolen copy of Photoshop, let him do it . . . and good luck with that. Because cousin Roy doesn’t have any idea about proper font usage, sizing issues, file formats, and proper design fundamentals. And Photoshop isn’t the right tool for the job, in my opinion, so piss off, Roy.
Charities. I’m becoming irritated with people constantly asking for free help designing things for their charities. Guess what? I have my own problems at the moment. I’d love to help and I intend to when I am financially able, but now is not the time. Throw money at me and I might start to care.
I really don’t mean to come off as a total prick. Really. And I feel I am risking some stuff by putting it out there for all to see, but I’ve gotta do what I believe in. Different people do different things to get by in this life. It’s only fair to play fair. And yeah, I’ll help you out if you need a little graphic or something. Just not anything nuts. Little stuff. Just ask me.
Whew! There! I said it. Feels like a weight has been lifted off my back. Thanks for understanding!
