I was initially going to write a post about the colour Green, but it’ll have to wait, as something with great urgency has come up. In the words of the character Jimmy Serrano (played by Dennis Farina in the movie Midnight Run) – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkZFHFe35rs our venerable Toyota Corolla is about to turn 200,000 km on the odometer. I’ve never seen it happen before, so I’ve been preparing for the past couple thousand kilometres. At the time of this writing, it’s Sunday at 1:00 in the afternoon and I believe I have approximately 130 km to go until the big anniversary. The plan is to literally waste fuel and drive the car until it hits the mark so that I can grab a picture of the odometer.

Well, as it happens, plans had to change once again and we weren’t able to pound out the last 130 km to hit the mark. With a mere 90 km left until the magical 200,000, it seems we are experiencing some minor reverse gear engagement issues. My panic has since turned to “whatever, I don’t care anymore”, and if the car is a bit injured, it’s been faithful for the past 11 years. Hopefully it’s something minor. It gets to go to the mechanic on Wednesday to see what the hell.

Anyway, the more pressing issue at hand is the fact that I won’t be around tomorrow to pay attention to the mileage, as I’ll be out working (sadly). Monica has the day off and will be using the car to drive a fair amount, but my initial calculations suggest she won’t accumulate 90 km. I think the big deal will happen on Tuesday. But I might have to force the issue tomorrow (Monday), because she will most certainly not be paying sufficient attention to snap a photo of the odometer. This is a big deal. I don’t want to have to get another car and drive it around for another 11 years to hit this.

As I write this post, I’m reflecting on what our Toyota has been through over the years. It has been Monica’s daily driver the entire time, taking her to work every day. It has taken us to Vancouver and back many times. It took us to Kelowna in the early days of Crock of Shirt to scout out silkscreen supplies. It is our main grocery-getter vehicle. It has been driven into our garage door, which now has a dent (not me). It has also been backed into a work table in the garage, which is where the trunk lid dent came from (not me). It has also been backed into by a rogue minivan, which is where the left fender dent came from (not me). Oh, and the windshield has been cracked for many years (probably not me). All in all, it has been a seriously reliable car.

Just about there! One hundred clicks to go!

Turns out the car now (Monday evening) has just 31 kilometres to go until the magical 200,000 mark and Monica has just taken it out for the evening.  It’s a huge risk, as it will most likely hit the target without her noticing. She doesn’t seem to care as much as I do about this monumental achievement, so she probably won’t pull over to take the picture. Too bad. Oh well, 49,000 kilometres to go on my truck and I’ll get another chance haha!

The next post should be about the colour green. Stay tuned, friends …
